PROJECT: CELEBRATING FILTON
CLIENT: SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL
Filton is an area of North Bristol, in South Gloucestershire.
The project was commissioned by the High Streets Regeneration Team, South Gloucestershire Council
OBJECTIVE
To create a vibrant and colourful art piece/illustrated map of Filton to be featured on the Council’s printed display boards around the area and also for use across print & email marketing and social media.
There were a number of aims for the art piece:
• To link the various shopping areas within Filton together, and give a sense of what is available locally
• To support the restoration of civic pride and celebrate what the area has to offer
• To be part of a wayfinding strategy
• To add art and colour to the area
Also included in the brief was that the art piece should incorporate an element of community engagement.
The look and feel of the final piece is intended to reflect the local area, with an emphasis on building a vibrant, celebratory and community feel. My aim was to create something that was fun, positive and engaging - representing the area’s geography and key places and adding context through the inclusion of historical points of reference and comments from members of the community.
Some close-ups….
As part of the project, there was some consultation with individuals from the community in the form of small focus groups - this was carried out by the Council’s High Street Regeneration team.
The consultation enabled us to gather input from local individuals on the positive aspects of the area and community - their words have been incorporated around the edge of the design.
PROCESS
Pictured below is my initial sketch layout, featuring the illustrated elements to be included.
You’ll also see a second version which incorporated a few more quotes taken from the community engagement. There is obviously quite a lot going on in the piece as a whole, so the words were simplified a little with fewer being used in the final artwork.
